Meet The Candidate...
MBA CMA CPA
Who is James Li?
I was born into a family of scholars about 2 hours outside of Beijing. My father was a professor and one of the first postdoctoral scholars in China, while my grandfather was the president of a university. My family environment and upbringing led me to develop an enduring passion for learning, and I believe a solid education builds a critical foundation for every child’s future.
After arriving in Canada at age 10 and receiving both my elementary and secondary education in the Toronto District School Board, I went on to complete a bachelor’s degree at the University of Western Ontario. Soon after, my passion for learning led me to pursue a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA CMA) certification, followed by a marketing-focused MBA degree from the Schulich School of Business.
MY PASSION FOR EDUCATION
My passion for education and desire to contribute to my community later motivated me to become a Civilian Instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 166 Bulldog Squadron, which operates right here in Don Valley North, from Woodbine Junior High School in the Don Mills Peanut area.
I served as the Training Officer in charge of cadets in their second year of studies, and remain deeply proud of my students every day. I particularly love the Air Cadets organization because it gives young people a chance to develop many important skills: leadership, discipline, teamwork, and confidence in one’s ability to achieve any goal.
WHY AM I THE BEST CHOICE?
Passion aside, my work at the TDSB would also draw from the experience I have gained over the years from my past successes in the business world. Throughout my fruitful career, I have provided financial management in the aerospace and defense industry, as well as financial portfolio management in private equity. In my present position, I serve as a senior manager of marketing strategy management in the telecommunications industry. My wide-ranging knowledge base and diverse set of experiences have allowed me to achieve success in every role I have taken on.
One of my greatest accomplishments to date is establishing a revolutionary STEM-focused educational program. My team used a forward-thinking set of edutainment-style teaching methods to help youth aged 6–12 learn important STEM concepts that are typically only learned by high school-aged students — all while having a ton of fun!
As my personal and professional background demonstrates, I want to become Trustee in Don Valley North because I have a deep drive to contribute to the community I live in, and an unyielding desire to put all of my knowledge and experiences into action making our area a better place to live with each passing day.
I want to become Trustee in Don Valley North because I know I will work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of all parents are heard — and that the needs of all students are met.
I want to become Trustee because, quite simply, I know I am the best candidate for the job.
