Let's Talk About Issues...
Issues That We Focus On:
As a TDSB Trustee Candidate, it is my responsibility to raise up issues that will help change the quality of students. Helping our students succeed and listening to the voices of parents
1. Increase the focus on STEM education and after school programs
What will I do?
01.
Help students develop interests in STEM education by finding creative ways at an elementary school level to help students like, understand, and enjoy STEM.
02.
Drive knowledge retention by promoting effective yet engaging ways to practice and memorize fundamental elements of math and science.
03.
Promote after school activities that will help students understand the importance of STEM in everyday life.
04.
Maintain focus on building a strong foundation in math and science through helping students retain knowledge in fundamental concepts and formulas.
Why is this important?
Our world is becoming more technologically dependent
- Recent developments in computerization and automation of society means our next generations must be a lot more attuned to topics covered in STEM education than ever before
Improved STEM education will prepare our children to become more ready to compete in their future careers
- Our children will rely much more on technology in their future careers
- Solid educational background in STEM will make them more competitive
Students are focusing more on STEM education in post-secondary education
- 14% increase in STEM post-secondary academic program enrollment from 2012 to 2016 in Ontario
- 5% increase in all post-secondary academic program enrollment from 2012 to 2016 in Ontario
- Ontario students are more likely to go into a STEM program than ever
2. Improve financial management in our schools
What will I do?
01.
Use my experience in business management to drive efficiencies in school operations and reduce waste
02.
Focus resources on activates that will yield the most impact for students
03.
Manage the allocation of funding so that students receive a balanced and well-rounded
education that will best prepare them for the future.
04.
We should not reduce the total amount of money spent on our schools — only cut out waste that does not add value for our students
Why is this important?
- We have limited funding for our schools so it is important to manage how money is spent.
- Reducing waste will allow our limited funds to be used more efficiently to deliver a better education
3. Improve school safety and reduce bullying
What will I do?
01.
Increase oversight on school safety and increase safety training for school staff
members
02.
Enhance teacher training in respects of dealing with bullying and conflicts between
students
03.
Introduce student team-building programs that will help develop friendship and acceptance between students
Why is this important?
- Toronto is facing a rising crime rate and the safety of our students should always be our foremost concern
- We can never do enough to ensure that our children are protected from harm
- All students should feel safe and welcomed at school
- Students perform better when they are accepted and free to be themselves
4. Listen to the voice of parents. Establish a parents representative committee.
What will I do?
01.
Set up and chair parent representative committee within the ward. Each school will elect 2 parents as representatives.
02.
Committee will conduct bi-monthly meeting thoughts, ideas, and issues that the parents raise.
03.
I, as the trustee, will take matters that are important to the parents and present them before the school board.
Why is this important?
- Parents should be able to become more involved in their children's education, and their voice must be heard by the TDSB.
- This committee will create an effective forum for the parents to voice their concerns and discuss their issues.
- This will also create a platform where parents can share ideas among themselves.
WHAT I CARE FOR!
1. Listening to the voice of parents
2. Preparing our children for success
3. Providing the best education in the world
